Men’s Counselling and Psychotherapy, Aberdeen.
Men’s mental health and counselling service.
Men, your mental health matters!
Research has shown that men are less likely to speak to a family member, friend or doctor about any issues or distress they are feeling or facing.
Men are less likely to ask for help or seek therapy, yet your mental health is as important as your physical health, so we have to ask, why?
‘Social norms’ dictate certain expectations of ‘what a man should be’! For example, boys are often taught they have to be strong, self-reliant, resilient and the classic ‘boys don’t cry’ - these are signs of masculinity and social conditioning! You grow up feeling you have to be the breadwinner, responsible and be in full control of yourself and your emotions. You have to keep it all together, hiding how you really feel.
Yet, whilst this may be OK for some, for others it can create feelings of anger, pressure, inadequacy, shame, guilt, disappointment and distress. The more pressure put on to men to feel, act and behave this way when facing their own distress, the more of a detrimental impact it creates, it’s no wonder men will reach breaking point under these conditions.
Shockingly and sadly, statistics show that suicide represents the largest cause of death for men under the age of 50 in the UK. 75% of all suicides in the UK are men (mentalhealth.org.uk).
In essence, by masking or ignoring distress, it will makes your life harder. You hold it all in, try to keep it all together, stay strong, maybe use alcohol or drugs to get by, but it just gets worse. You still feel that pressure, you may feel sad, angry, frustrated, alone or confused.
It’s a vicious circle, but you can break that cycle - you just need to talk!
Lets smash these barriers down!
Don’t hide it - Talk to someone today!
Support is out there, and more information is available regarding issues surrounding ‘men’s mental health, but it is still not enough. Simply put - men you need to talk more! Talking about how you feel is the first step.
You can also learn to express and feel emotions, when asked how you are feeling it’s not always ‘alright’ or OK!
So, if you are struggling talk to a family member or a close friend - Go see your GP. Contact a therapist, that’s exactly what we are here for, we are genuinely here to help you.
